Among manufacturing processes, 5-axis machining stands out as one of the most effective ways to produce complex parts with tight tolerances. Beyond its ability to handle complexity, 5-axis machining is incredibly efficient for manufacturing standard-tolerance parts that would otherwise require multiple operations on a 3-axis mill. Instead of performing multiple setups and spending time to program each operation, a 5-axis machine can minimize the number of setups required, streamlining production to achieve significant cost savings.

At Axis Fabrication & Machine—or Axis Fab, for short— our 5-axis machining capabilities allow us to efficiently produce parts with intricate features from a wide range of materials. By leveraging the efficiency of 5-axis machining, we’re able to manufacture precision parts with complex geometries while simultaneously achieving lower production costs. But more than just machining, Knoxville machine shop, relies on a broad range of capabilities to provide our customers with comprehensive solutions for all of their production needs.

How 5-Axis Milling Improves Efficiency and Drives Cost Savings

Most CNC mills that manufacturers rely on fall broadly within the categories of 3-axis and 5-axis machines. While there are certainly CNC machines with additional axes, a 3-axis or 5-axis mill is more than sufficient for most parts.

So, when looking at the benefits of 5-axis milling over 3-axis milling, what is it about the additional two axes that makes 5-axis mills so much more efficient and often a more cost-effective production method?

It largely comes down to the greater range of motion that the two additional axes of movement provide. While 3-axis machines can only cut along the X, Y, and Z axes, 5-axis machines can also cut along the A and B axes. This has several advantages, including:

5-Axis machining

Fewer Required Setups

With a greater range of motion, 5-axis mills require fewer machine setups to manufacture even complex parts. This results in greater accuracy, as parts don’t require repositioning. In addition, fewer setups can significantly reduce the labor costs associated with setting up parts for different operations.

Less Programing

Programming a CNC machine can take quite a bit of time, and the more setups required, the more programming needs to be done. But with fewer setups required for 5-axis machining, we’re able to reduce the amount of programming by up to two-thirds compared to using a 3-axis mill. Not only does this result in lower labor costs, but faster production times, as well.

Greater Flexibility and Precision

Stemming from fewer required setups, but also just based on the machine’s capabilities, 5-axis mills are relied upon for the design freedom they offer and their ability to achieve incredible precision. This is essential for manufacturing parts with three-dimensional features and tight tolerances. With our advanced 5-axis machining capabilities, we can quickly and efficiently manufacture parts with complex three-dimensional features and achieve tolerances of +/- 0002” to .0003”.

While some three-dimensional features could be manufactured on a 3-axis mill, it would require numerous setups and still would not achieve the level of precision of a 5-axis mill. Ultimately, 5-axis machining delivers higher-quality results at a similar (or lower) cost.

Are My Parts a Good Fit for 5-Axis Milling?

Though 3-axis milling has long been the standard for cost-effective production, engineers are increasingly designing more complex parts, whether for improved functionality or aesthetic purposes. As such, there’s a good chance that our 5-axis CNC milling service offers the most efficient and cost-effective method for manufacturing your parts with precision.

This is particularly true if your part designs include any of the following:

  • 3D Features: Manufacturing parts with 3D features can be done quickly and cost-effectively on a 5-axis mill. With the ability of 5-axis mills to access nearly all sides of a part, 3D features can be cut smoothly and efficiently, often with a single setup, helping you achieve exceptional results at lower production costs.
  • Tight Tolerances: If your part designs require tight tolerances, 5-axis machining ensures superior accuracy. For this reason, companies in the aerospace and defense industries frequently leverage 5-axis machining to manufacture critical components for a variety of applications.
  • Ergonomic Geometries: Ergonomics is an important aspect of many parts, and both shape and weight play significant roles. With a 5-axis machine’s ability to manufacture parts with complex geometries, ergonomic and lightweight designs become relatively simple to manufacture. Among our customers, 5-axis machining has been relied on heavily by companies within the firearms manufacturing industry, allowing them to design ergonomic parts that are notable differentiators and help them stand out at industry events like the SHOT Show
